Why Do Mutual Fund NAVs Fluctuate?

Jun 24, 2026 2 min read

The Net Asset Value (NAV) of a mutual fund represents the per-unit value of the fund’s assets after deducting its liabilities.

Formula NAV = (Total Assets – Liabilities) ÷ Number of Outstanding Units

NAV is computed at the end of each trading day, in accordance with regulatory norms. It reflects the current market value of the portfolio on that date and does not indicate future performance.

Why NAV Changes

The NAV of a mutual fund changes daily due to fluctuations in the value of the underlying securities. Some of the key influencing factors include:

  • Market Movements The securities in the fund’s portfolio—such as equity and debt instruments—are subject to market fluctuations. These affect the total value of assets and thereby the NAV.
  • Fund Expenses Management fees, custodian charges, and other operational expenses are deducted from the fund's assets. These expenses can impact the NAV over time.
  • Performance of Underlying Securities If the market value of the securities held by the fund increases, the NAV may rise. Conversely, declines in value may lower the NAV.
  • Income Distribution When a fund distributes income (dividends or interest) to investors, the NAV typically decreases by the payout amount to reflect the outflow of funds.
  • Capital Gains or Losses Realised capital gains from selling securities can increase NAV before distribution. Realised losses may reduce the NAV.
  • Cash Inflows and Outflows Subscriptions and redemptions generally do not alter the NAV per unit, but large flows may influence portfolio value if they trigger significant buying or selling of securities.
  • Economic and Regulatory Factors Macroeconomic variables such as interest rates, inflation, or monetary policy decisions can impact asset valuations. Regulatory changes may also affect certain sectors.
  • Currency Exchange Movements Funds with foreign asset exposure may experience NAV changes due to fluctuations in currency exchange rates.

Key Considerations

NAV is a valuation metric, not a performance indicator. Instead of the absolute NAV value, the percentage change in NAV over time provides a better understanding of value movement.

When analysing a mutual fund, several other factors are typically considered, such as:

  • Expense ratio
  • Investment mandate and portfolio strategy
  • Historical performance* (with disclaimer: past performance may or may not be sustained in future).
  • Risk measures (standard deviation, beta, Sharpe)

Conclusion

Mutual fund NAV is subject to daily changes due to various internal and external factors. While NAV reflects the per-unit value of a fund on a particular day, it should be interpreted alongside other parameters such as fund strategy, cost structure, and historical data.
