How to Close a Demat Account: Step-by-Step Guide for 2026

Closing a Demat account is straightforward once you know the right steps, but thousands of investors delay it and end up paying annual maintenance charges on accounts they no longer use. If your Demat account has been inactive, the closure process generally involves clearing or transferring any holdings, submitting a closure request to your Depository Participant (DP), and waiting for the closure to be processed and confirmed.

What to Know Before Closing Your Demat Account

Your Demat account is held with a Depository Participant (DP), SEBI-registered Depository Participant registered with NSDL or CDSL. Closure requests must therefore go through your DP.

As of September 2024, SEBI has directed depositories to allow investors to close Demat accounts fully online without giving a reason for the DP. The available process can still vary depending on the broker's process or operational workflow.

Check whether your DP offers online closure.

Confirm whether physical forms are required.

Clear any pending dues before submitting the request.

Follow your broker's specific closure process.

Reasons to Close an Unused Demat Account

An unused Demat account may still attract Annual Maintenance Charges (AMC), depending on the broker and account type. The applicable AMC can vary across providers and may also depend on the terms of the account. The exact amount depends on the broker you are using.

Even if the account is not being used, it can still cause problems with compliance and record-keeping. An account with no transactions for a continuous period of 12 months may be classified as inactive or dormant under the applicable depository and Depository Participant (DP) rules.

Holding onto a Demat account can also mean outdated personal details, like an old email or phone number. This may require additional verification later and can make it more difficult to manage and monitor your investments, particularly if you hold multiple accounts.

Freezing an account stops all transactions keeps the account open. This is useful if you plan to use it in the future. Future AMC generally stops after the Demat account is successfully closed, although any outstanding dues or liabilities from the period before closure may remain payable.

Pre-Closure Checklist: What to Verify Before Closing Your Demat Account

Before submitting the closure request, check the following:

Confirm whether the account has any shares, mutual fund units, bonds, ETFs, or other securities.

Sell or transfer all securities before closure.

Clear outstanding AMC, transaction charges, penalties, or other dues.

Release any pledged securities before submitting the closure request.

Keep the required documents ready.

For joint accounts, ensure all holders sign the closure form in the same order as the original account opening form.

Document Format Required Notes
PAN Card Self-attested photocopy or e-copy Mandatory for all account holders
Aadhaar Card or Address Proof Self-attested photocopy Government-issued ID with current address
Demat Account Closure Form Signed original or digital Available from the DP
Client Master List (CML) of target account Photocopy from target DP Required when transferring securities
Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) Original, duly filled Required when transferring securities
Cancelled cheque or bank passbook copy Clear bank details Required for refund of any credit balance

If securities are pledged, they must be unpledged before closure. The release process typically takes one to two working days.

How to Close a Demat Account Online: Step-by-Step Process

Closing a Demat account online is now the preferred route for most investors.

Log Into Your DP Portal or App: Use the primary account holder's registered credentials.

Locate the Closure Option: Check Account Services, My Account, Profile, or a similar section.

Complete the Digital Form: Provide your Client ID, PAN, and linked bank details accurately.

Upload KYC Documents: Most DPs require PAN and address proof. Some may offer Aadhaar-based e-KYC.

Submit and Track: After submission, you usually receive an acknowledgement by email or SMS. Processing generally takes 7 to 10 working days for a complete application.

Offline Demat Account Closure: Physical Form Submission

Some traditional or bank-linked DPs may still use physical closure forms.

Obtain the closure form from the DP's website or branch. Fill in your client ID, name, PAN, and bank details as registered.

For joint accounts, all holders must sign the required order. Avoid overwriting or correcting fluid, as incorrect forms can be rejected.

Attach self-attested PAN and address proof. If securities are being transferred, include the DIS and target CML. A cancelled cheque may be required for credit balance refunds.

Submit the documents at the DP's branch or send them to the registered correspondence address. Keep proof of dispatch when using courier or post.

How to Transfer Your Securities Before Closing (Closure-Cum-Transfer Explained)

If securities remain in the account, they generally need to be transferred to another eligible demat account or otherwise dealt with before the source account can be closed. Selling the securities is not the only option.

The process requires a Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) and the Client Master List (CML) of the target account.

The CML contains details such as the target holder's name, DP ID, Client ID, PAN, and bank details. Where a physical DIS is used, it contains the transfer details required by the DP, including the relevant securities and quantities. Electronic transfer mechanisms such as e-DIS may also be available depending on the DP.

If both accounts use NSDL or both use CDSL, the transfer is intra-depository and usually takes two to three working days. Transfers between NSDL and CDSL are inter-depository and may take three to five working days.

After completing the DIS and obtaining the CML, submit the transfer documents and closure form to the DP.

Factor Zero Holdings Closure Closure with Existing Securities
DIS Required No Yes
CML Required No Yes
Estimated Processing Time 5–7 working days 7–15 working days
Form Required Closure form only Closure form + DIS
Can Be Done Online? Yes Partially, depending on DP
Risk of Rejection Low if dues are cleared Higher if DIS or pledge issues exist

Demat Account Closure Timeline and What Happens After

A zero-holding account with no outstanding dues may close in about five working days. Accounts requiring Closure-Cum-Transfer can take 10 to 15 working days.

Overall, DPs typically process complete closure requests within 7 to 10 working days, although timelines vary by broker and account status.

Closing the Demat account does not close the linked savings or current account. The bank account continues to operate separately.

Any eligible credit balance, such as a refund or uncredited amount, may be returned to the linked bank account.

Why Can a Demat Account Closure Request Be Rejected?

Common rejection reasons include:

Rejection Reason How to Fix It
Securities still held Sell or transfer them before closure
Outstanding dues Clear AMC, penalties, and other dues
Pledged securities Release the pledge before applying
Signature mismatch Sign as per the original account records
Incorrect DIS Incorrect ISIN, DP ID, Client ID quantity, or signature
Missing documents PAN, KYC proof, CML, DIS or holder signatures
Incomplete details Check Client ID and bank information carefully

Preparing the checklist before submission can prevent most avoidable rejections. If rejected, the DP should communicate the reason. Unresolved grievances can be escalated through SEBI's SCORES portal.

Special Cases in Demat Account Closure

For joint accounts, all holders must sign the closure form in the required order. A Power of Attorney holder can sign only when the POA specifically permits account closure.

If a sole demat-account holder dies, the securities generally need to undergo the applicable transmission process before the account can be closed. The procedure and documents differ depending on whether a nominee is registered, whether there are surviving joint holders, and whether transmission is being claimed by legal heirs.

NRI accounts may involve additional FEMA and RBI requirements, particularly where securities in NRE accounts are transferred or repatriated.

SEBI's 2024 Rule Change: What It Means for Demat Account Closure

In September 2024, SEBI directed depositories to enable online Demat account closure without requiring investors to provide a reason. The change removed a major procedural barrier. Investors can use the broker's online portal or app, complete the required authentication, and submit the closure request.

Most leading discount brokers have implemented online closure options. Some smaller or bank-linked DPs may still have different procedures. Investors can escalate issues through SEBI's SCORES portal or relevant depository grievance mechanisms if a DP creates unjustified barriers.

Conclusion

Closing a Demat account is a practical financial step and with SEBI's 2024 online closure directive in place, it's now simpler than ever to complete the Demat account closure process without branch visits or unexplained delays. Whether the account has zero holdings or existing securities, following the pre-closure checklist and understanding, the transfer process will prevent the most common rejection of reasons and ensure a clean, complete closure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Closing a Demat Account

The questions below address the most common queries investors have about the Demat account closure process. Each answer reflects the current rules as of 2026.

What documents do I need to close a Demat account?

You generally need PAN, address proof, the closure form, and bank proof. Securities transfers may also require DIS and the target account's CML.

How long does it take to close a Demat account?

Zero-holdings accounts may take 5 to 7 working days. Closure-Cum-Transfer can take around 10 to 15 working days.

What happens to my AMC if I close mid-year?

AMC refunds depend on the DP. Some offer a pro-rated refund, while others treat annual AMC as non-refundable.

What happens to my linked bank account after Demat account closure?

The linked bank account remains separate and continues normally. Eligible refunds or credit balances may be returned to it.

What is the difference between closing and freezing a Demat account?

Closing permanently shuts the account. Freezing suspends transactions but keeps the account open and may continue to attract AMC.

Can I reopen a closed Demat account?

No. A formally closed Demat account cannot be reopened. You need to open a new Demat account if you want to invest again.
