As of March 2025, the stock of household financial assets in India has grown significantly, reaching 107% of GDP, with a total value of ₹352.6 lakh crore, representing a 26.65% growth over the last three years. This growth is driven by increasing income levels, financial inclusion, and a shift towards more formal financial instruments.
Bank deposits, including savings accounts, fixed deposits, and recurring deposits, account for the largest share of household financial assets, due to the perceived safety and liquidity associated with them. Over the past few years, Indian households have undergone a significant transformation in their financial behavior. With rising income levels, improving financial literacy, and increased access to various investment options, households have diversified their financial assets.
The growth of the Indian stock market and increasing awareness about investing have led households to allocate a larger portion of their assets to equities and mutual funds. Additionally, life insurance policies, health insurance, and pension funds have gained popularity as households seek to secure their financial future and mitigate risks. Notably, over the last three years, mutual fund assets have grown by 32%, followed by pension funds (27%), small savings (13%), and life insurance funds (12%).
This
growth in household financial assets is a positive trend, indicating increasing
financial deepening and diversification in the Indian economy.
